2.Conflict Issues/Needs

On the 30th September 2009, a devastating earthquake of a magnitude 7.6 richter (Source: USGS) occurred in the offshore Padang, Sumatra Island.
According to the Indonesian Government, by October 2nd, the number of deaths and missing people attained over 1,100.

The infrastructure is severely damaged, with both water and electricity systems in Padang, not functioning at all.
Moreover, remote areas have experienced even more harsh damage than Padang city, to the extent that nearly all houses are either partially or fully destroyed.
Many families have nowhere else to go, and are living in destroyed houses, and considering the real possibility that another earthquake hits, the local people are having to cope in a very exposed environment.

JEN has immediately dispatched its staff to the site and began assessment and emergency assistance.

2) Our Activities in Indonesia

1. JEN’s Assisstance Program Policy

According to the assessment research JEN has confirmed that supply of food and water material meets the local demand, with the assistance from Indonesian Government and international organizations. However, despite this clear progress, extensive effort has to be maintained to address the scores of destroyed houses, as well as help rebuild the lives of those affected by quake.

It was notified that it seemed those who lived further from Padang are those who suffered the greatest damage., with many having no other option but to live in ruined houses or even outdoors. However, the rent after the earthquake has risen by 80%, and people cannot purchase tools to remove remnants of destroyed buildings.

JEN has decided to distribute removal tool kits, shelter kits and hygiene supplies.

2. Current Project

From 14th October 2009, ten villages in the Pariaman Region, located about 100 km north of Padang city, JEN began distribution of shelter tool kits (shovel, hammer, saw, pliers, cart etc), and UNICEF hygiene kit (soap, dust cloth, bucket, toothbrush, toothpaste, towel etc).

The villagers began building tents, temporary shelters and removing remnants before the rainy season hits the region.

Along with emergency distribution project, JEN is also conducting assessment to gather information for our next project.
