Ramadan, but a project continues…

2013.07.25

Ramadan has started since the 10th of July in Jordan. This year’s Ramadan is the toughest Ramadan in decades. People fasting do not take any foods or water from sunrise, around 4am to sunset, around 8pm.

When I was in Taxi around sunset, water and dates were provided to cars waiting at the traffic light.

It is said that during Ramadan one who does good deeds can expect to obtain more rewards than usual time. Therefore ordinary people are individually doing these practices. One of our national colleague said that she prepares foods and gives them to the poor every week during Ramadan. Actually for Muslim people, it seems not to be a special thing to dispense charity to others, but it takes root in their life and culture.

From the view of project implementation, things are easily stuck during Ramadan because most government offices shorten the working hours. But the project cannot wait, so JEN Amman office continues to work, shortening working period.

For school rehabilitation project in host communities, JEN engineers are visiting schools whose WASH facilities plan to be rehabilitated in order to prepare the Bill of quantities. Usually headmasters/mistresses are very cooperative and welcome us when we contact them. But during Ramadan, most of them are sleeping until late in the morning, so they frequently ask us to come to a school around midday. The higher the temperature is, the tougher it is to conduct assessment outside. But we have to cope!  Obviously, it was exhausting  to go around schools without drinking water outside around 30 degrees, and such engineers’ effort make our project able to continue.

This project is being executed thanks to the support of Japan Platform, all our members and contributors.
